Essence is the intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of something that determines its character. The most basic and purest forms of an object, subject, service, way of living, traits of a person, people or community all point to the essence of ‘who’ or ‘what’ they are. How do you tap the essence of your life?
What makes your heart sing? What are you naturally talented in? What are you drawn to do when you have time to spare? Big questions to think about…
When you start to recognize that which comes effortlessly for you, feels easy to spend time doing, brings a smile to your face when you think about that thing you love to do, or calls you to do more of, then this is the essence of your happiness. As you deliberately begin to focus your time and energy on these things, services and people, a very subtle but tangible shift takes place in your life. As you do more of that which brings you joy, each day begins to feel more rewarding. Within a short space of time you will find yourself eagerly greeting each day for the possibly and the growing reality that your life feels good and you are the very one creating that goodness just for you. The beautiful payoff is that those around you also benefit from a ripple effect of your happiness and attitude.
Quality time deliberately spent in quietness, stillness and apart from others is highly beneficial in finding the clarity you seek.
It goes without saying that meditation is one of the most gentle and life altering practices when utilized regularly. Meditation means many things to many different people – if sitting cross-legged on a hard floor with a straight back and chanting OMM for a significant length of time does not appeal to you then don’t fret. To meditate is to contemplate, consider or ponder… That quiet place you seek might be relaxing in a warm scented bath by candle light, lying on a blanket in a meadow listening to a bubbling stream, reclining in a hammock under the shade of a palm tree, watching tropical fish dart amongst the beautiful shades of coral whilst you lazily snorkel overhead, become mesmerized by the flames of a crackling hearth whilst the snow falls softly outside or quietly appreciate the beauty of a rising full moon whilst enjoying a crisp glass of chardonnay in the company of someone you love.
The key is to reach a place of appreciation for your life and for that it is important to create the circumstances to honour that. Start small but do it often. It is the small moments in life that make all the difference to your overall life.
If you are not so sure about what you do want in your life then become very clear about what you don’t want in your life.
Most people are more definite about what they don’t want. Notice what you own opinions are about things, subjects, ideas, and happenings within in your own life, family, friendships, workplace, community, country and the world. When you are sure about what you don’t want or like or are no longer willing to tolerate – start to ask yourself the opposite of what you don’t like is. This exercise is not to turn your entire world upside down but to rather begin gently introducing new ideas, ways of being and relating to people – slowly and steadily life starts to adjust and you will live from a more authentic and wholehearted place that feels wonderfully right for you.
Let your word be your honour.
Such a challenge in today’s world, keeping our word and meaning what we say is not a lost art form but is a relatively rare quality in the bigger scheme of life. We are constantly bombarded by the dramas of movies, TV programs, violent news stories, gossipy magazine articles, trashy reality shows and crazy stuff on social media. It pays to be informed but not inundated! As you begin to unplug from all the negativity you will find there is now space for original thought, time for meaningful interactions and the building of quality relationships. Respect and trust are the foundation to any successful relationship no matter whom it’s with and this all starts by keeping your word. Mean what you say and say what you mean. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Be kind when you are saying it. Show up when you say you will. If plans change then let the others know as soon as possible. Clear communication is secret to long and successful relationships.
Become clear on your gifts or talents.
These are the things you are naturally and effortlessly good at. Unsure? You may have a natural rapport with children and animals, a beautiful singing voice, draw or paint wonderful portraits or landscapes, love athletics and participate in a wide range of sports, understand and solve difficult equations easily or create delicious meals from scratch inventing your own recipes or dishes… If these examples don’t resonate with you – ask your family and friends what they think you are good at. Listen for similarities or themes that emerge when you have these life changing conversations with them. Tapping into these God gifted resources you naturally have can easily set you on a whole new and amazing way of living and wealth building. As the saying goes – when you love what you do – you never work a day in your life!
Care for yourself the way you would anyone else you love.
When we love another, we truly care about what happens to them – their physical and mental wellbeing, their quality of life, their happiness and so on. Nobody is more important than you, neither are you more important than anyone else. That said, love fosters caring, kindness, support, acceptance and recognition. When you take the time to nurture yourself and take care of your own needs, you automatically have more love to give others. If you haven’t got it – then you can’t give it!
